The project

As part of NEOM's Vision 2030 ambitions, the Al-Badaa interim Biosolids Treatment Facility (BTF) produces Class B biosolids — later to be replaced by the OXAGON Central Regional facility generating Class A. Alongside the BTF, a Biosolids Demonstration Center with exhibition space, experimental field plots, a greenhouse and laboratories is being built. Facilities of this kind demand reliable, sustainable stormwater management from the outset. NGS was engaged to deliver the SuDS infiltration and attenuation solution, working with PM consultant Bechtel, design consultant EEG, and main contractor Lantania with Tawzea.

The challenge

An environmental treatment facility sits within a sensitive context — surface water must be managed responsibly, returned to the ground where possible, and handled without consuming the large surface footprint that traditional ponds or concrete tanks demand. The solution also had to install quickly and safely within an active, multi-party construction programme, and meet the sustainability expectations attached to a flagship NEOM environmental asset.

The NGS solution

NGS provided its modular AquaCell SuDS system for infiltration and attenuation across a 10,000 m³ scope. Installed below ground, the cells let surface water infiltrate back into the earth close to where it falls — freeing valuable surface area for operational use while managing storm flows reliably. AquaCell's modular design suits shallow and deep excavation in trafficked and non-trafficked areas, and its lightweight, robust structure enables rapid, safe installation. NGS applied the same value-engineering approach proven across the Kingdom — sizing the system precisely to the design data to control cost and programme.

The outcome

NGS delivered a sustainable, low-maintenance stormwater solution befitting a flagship NEOM environmental facility — installed and inspected under the oversight of the NEOM ETSD Quality Team — reinforcing AquaCell as a proven alternative to traditional concrete drainage in the Kingdom. Building on the NEOM Construction Villages project, Al-Badaa further established NGS as a trusted SuDS partner to NEOM and its tier-one contractors across Saudi Arabia.
